How to Make Neon Dip Dyed Ghost Tassels

Dip dyed ghost tassels dipped in neon yellow and green hanging on a canvas tote bag

Today I’m sharing these dip dyed ghost tassels I made for Halloween last year. I found this canvas Meri Meri tote bag at Home Goods and loved the neon windowpane print. Doesn’t it remind you of the graph paper you used in math class? Haha I was a bit of a math nerd! With Halloween around the corner I decided to make some neon ghost tassels to decorate my bag. Don’t these just scream “too ghoul for school!”? I’m definitely toting this around on my trips to the craft stores this month! The best part about this project? You probably already have all the materials on hand (especially if you kept up with the tie dye trend this summer!). These tassels are perfect for adding a colorful touch to your home and they can even be made into earrings! Keep reading to learn how you can make these and get into the Halloween spirit!

Materials

Cotton or wool yarn in white or cream

Rit Dye – I used neon yellow and neon green

Water

Vinegar

Hot glue gun

Googly eyes

Earring hooks (if making earrings)

Instructions

DIY tutorial of dip dyed ghost tassels.

Make the Tassels

1. Wrap cotton or wool yarn around a piece of cardboard. I did 30 times for the big ghost. The more you wrap, the chunkier your ghost!

2. Cut off the yarn and slide it off the cardboard.

3. Tie a double knot in the middle with another piece of yarn.

4. Cut through the loops.

5. Fold in half and tie another piece of yarn near the top to make the ghost’s neck.

6. Trim off excess yarn to make the bottom even.

Dip Dyeing the Tassels

7. Cover working area and wear gloves. Submerge tassel in water. Mix 1 cup hot water + 1 tsp dye + 1/2 tsp vinegar in a bowl.

8. Dip tassel into the dye mixture and soak until desired color is reached. Remove from liquid, squeeze out the excess, then allow to dry.

Make it Spooky

9. Hot glue on googly eyes.

Make them into Earrings too!

Similarly, you can make tiny versions of these tassels by following the same steps above. Just use a smaller piece of cardboard and less yarn. Attach googly eyes and earring hooks and get your spook on!
